Google aims to take HoloLens with a developing AR helmet

It seems that Google does not want to let Microsoft take the initiative in the field of augmented reality (AR).

As reported by The Verge, the social media giant is working on its own standalone AR headset in partnership with the Quanta computer manufacturer. The headset will be completely wireless and will work with a Qualcomm QSC603 family processor. The outlet also claims that the device will include a set of cameras and microphones, although their goal is not entirely clear at the moment.

Internally, Google and Quanta would have called the device "Google A65", but the first will probably change the name closer to its official release.

Of course, this assumes that the device is released. Google has a somewhat complicated past when it comes to wearable devices, as evidenced by the Google Glass debacle in 2014.

For those who did not know, Google Glass was a small device that looked like an eyeglass that contained a touchpad, an LED screen and a camera. This seemed like a pretty interesting concept, but widespread concerns about privacy and security largely killed the project shortly after it was released to the public.

Some feared that glasses could be used to record people without their permission, and many businesses (including movie theaters) preemptively prohibited the use of these devices in their establishments. As a result, Google has decided to reduce its losses and shift Glass's attention to businesses; a movement that has proven effective until now.

Anyway, assuming Google has learned from its past mistakes, A65 could turn out to be a serious competitor to Microsoft's HoloLens, but for now, the details are rare.
