Verizon Wireless is probably best known for possibly having the best cellular coverage in the country. However, this coverage has a price because wireless plans can be very expensive once you start adding devices (as a Verizon customer myself, I know it very well). For budget-conscious customers, Verizon has quietly launched Visible Wireless, a cellular service with everything unlimited ... with a few caveats.
Before turning to these caveats, let's look at the details. For $ 40 a month, you get unlimited data, text and minutes, and no contract is involved. As a bonus, Visible will not slow down your data speeds once you reach a certain threshold. To subscribe, you need to download the Visible application and register your account. Once your account is registered, you will receive a SIM card by mail. Payment can also be made via PayPal or Venmo if you do not wish to use a credit card.
Now for warnings. First, to create an account, you must be invited by someone who is already a Visible subscriber. Secondly, the application is only available on iOS, so Android users should not apply (for the moment) and the iPhone should be unlocked. Third, and probably most crucial, Visible limits download speeds to 5 Mbps and the video is only 480p.
Visible's branding strategy is interesting on cell phone marketing and seems geared towards Generation Y. The service is offered via an iOS application and new subscribers are won by word of mouth. It uses online payment systems like PayPal and none of its own brick and mortar stores with customer service being entirely virtual. Subscribers can start and stop the service entirely via the Visible application.
This may not be a horrible proposition for those who just need an inexpensive unlimited data plan and do not care about slower speeds. Non-contract means you can leave whenever you want. It can also be a Verizon effort to prevent anyone from leaving their postpaid wireless service.
