Marquise Goodwin and the 49ers did something extraordinary Tuesday: Bob Lange and Dan Beckler of the 49ers' communications staff organized a conference call with Goodwin, who agreed to speak despite his grief.
Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area, expressed his condolences to the authors of the team before the call began and Goodwin shared his story in his first public comments since the death of his child to be born.
"Never stop believing," said Goodwin, via Maiocco. "The reward will last longer than the pain, just because something you wanted all your life did not work out as you had expected - a lot of times that's not supposed to work like you want it, it will develop you as a person and make you better, and I know that my wife and I will be better after this situation. "
Goodwin and his wife, Morgan, lost their babies because of complications during pregnancy. A few hours later, he played in Sunday's win against the Giants, only because his wife insisted.
"Really, it was my wife's decision," Goodwin said. "I asked her if she wanted me to stay with her, and she insisted that I play in the game because she felt like my team needed me.
"She knows how I feel about the game and what impact I can have on my teammates and the outcome of the games, so that was only my wife's decision."
Goodwin captured a 83-yard touchdown, his first of the season, then kneeled in the end zone and pointed the ball to the sky. It was the most significant celebration of the touchdown in the NFL this season.
"I felt like everything was God in this situation, I was able to score a touchdown," Goodwin said. "And all the pain I felt at that moment reached me right away."
Goodwin and his wife spend the week off the team in Texas, mourning with their family.
"Morgan and I appreciate all the love we've had," Goodwin said. "We have a lot of people following us all the way, so maybe we can help people who have been through similar things that we've been through or learn from people who have gone through our situation."
