Bottom line: The iPhone X is a powerful phone with a flawless screen and flowing performance. However, an inconsistency with Face ID and a frustrating video experience can damage an otherwise superb smartphone.
Earlier, I wrote about my first impressions with the iPhone X. Now that I spent about six months with, I have the impression that I can to expose these experiences. Instead of going into each feature, I will simply indicate just my three preferences and disgusts of the device. Of course, I must point out that my iPhone X was bought with my own money. I like: Design
I will start by saying that I like the dimensions of the device. I have relatively small hands, so I like the fact that I can hold the iPhone X in one hand and still have access to the entire screen. I'm not necessarily a fan of rounded corners as this makes the iPhone very slippery but a silicone case has remedied that. The OLED screen itself is fantastic with accurate colors and deep blacks. The much-maligned "hack" does not bother me personally although it can sometimes annoy (more on that later).
I like: Performance
The iPhone X is powered by Apple's custom Bionic A11 chip and it pounding everything I can throw at it. Slide through the gestures of iOS 11 is satisfactory and fluid and most applications have been updated to support the screen ratio of the iPhone X.
Genre: Camera
Now, I fully recognize that the Google Pixel 2, the Huawei P20 Pro and the Samsung Galaxy S9 can all take better pictures than the iPhone X. In fact, I've posted a comparison shot between the Pixel 2 XL and the iPhone X in my first article of prints. That said, I was able to take some excellent photos with the camera from the iPhone X. I also use my iPhone X exclusively to shoot my YouTube videos until That I can save enough to buy a decent DSLR (although I'm sure some of you will say that you can buy this DSLR for less than the price of the iPhone X)
Do not like: the screen rate
Yes, I know. I've already said that the OLED screen was fantastic ... and that's it. However, watching a video is boring. As most readers of TechSpot know, the screen ratio of the iPhone X is 19.5: 9, which makes it larger than the average screen of the smartphone. Of course, I can see more vertical content when I scroll on Twitter or on websites but as soon as I go to YouTube, I get the black bars on the sides. I could pinch to zoom in order to fill the screen but then it cuts the video content up and down. I'll admit that this is not always a problem but it can be annoying.
Do not Like: Face ID
I miss Touch ID. I understand that Apple's intentions with Face ID were to make it all simple to take your phone and interact with it without thinking about authentication. However, Face ID is more frustrating than practical. For starters, since you have to look at it almost straight to authenticate your face, this makes use of the phone while being boring on the table.
In addition, Face ID itself is not as fast as (2nd generation) Touch ID and then it's not necessary * long * for it to recognize your face, this time accumulates over the day and becomes much more noticeable. Even then, sometimes he does not recognize my face at all and I have to turn the phone on and off to scan it again. Touch ID was reliable, fast and overall more convenient. I'm sure that Apple will improve face recognition speed in upcoming iPhones this fall.
Do not Like: Siri and Notifications
I admit it's no longer a chip of iOS 11 and so applies to all other iPhones but I think it's worth noting. For what I normally use Siri for (reminders, timers), it's normally pretty good. However, I recently plunged into the world of smart home and bought a Google Home Mini. The utility of the Google Assistant can not be overstated. I remember asking Siri how many NBA championships Michael Jordan had won and Siri gave me search lists of the teams for which Jordan played, I believe.
Meanwhile, the Google Assistant was giving me correctly every year that Jordan had won a championship. Certainly, asking about sports information may not be the most impressive thing, but it showed the disparity between Siri and Google Assistant as to how much data they had access to and how they handled those data. Siri has dropped dramatically behind Alexa and Cortana and Google's smart home ecosystem is growing rapidly.
I think most owners of my iPhone can attest to how terrible the notifications are on the iPhone. I also have an Android device at home and the organization is like night and day. I totally dislike the fact that notifications are not grouped by application. Instead, it's just this long list of notifications listed chronologically. If iOS had the Android notification system (and the ability to set default applications), it would be almost perfect.
Final remarks
Overall, I enjoyed the iPhone X. It's a great phone, but with some features that can annoy you. I've had all the iPhone since the iPhone 5 and most of my family also have iPhones, so I'm a little anchored in the ecosystem. However, I've had eye on the Google Pixel for quite a while and I think it may be the year when I ship on Android. I got used to the notch on the iPhone X so the alleged notch on the Pixel 3 XL does not bother me as much. Since I also have a Nest Thermostat and Nest Secure alarm system, I'm also well anchored in the Google ecosystem. It makes sense to switch to Android no?
