What just happened? Dell's game subsidiary before the annual E3 show unveiled its first wireless headset (and its first headset in general since the launch of the Alienware TactX in 2009). At this price, however, Alienware hits in the major leagues.

Officially known as Alienware Wireless Gaming Headset, the accessory offers 7.1 virtual surround sound via 40mm high fidelity neodymium drivers on a 20Hz to 20KHz frequency response. You also get a noise-canceling microphone on a pivot that activates automatically when it's moved and AlienFX lighting with two zones and 6.8 million colors to choose from.

The over-ear design includes lightweight sports net cushions with moisture wicking fabric. In 2.4GHz wireless mode using the included USB dongle, Alienware says you can expect a 15 hour battery life with the system off and up to 8.7 hours with AlienFX enabled. If you prefer a wired connection, simply attach the included 3.5mm combo cable that adds online commands. The wireless dongle installs in the headset when it is not used to reduce the chances of losing it, a particularly handy feature when traveling.

The Alienware Wireless Elite gaming headset is expected to arrive on June 11 for $ 229. This is not really cheap in today 's competitive market and places it in the same field as other proven suppliers like Astro, Razer and Sennheiser. We reserve the final judgment, however, until we can listen.
