Fun Fact: At 200 petaflops, if every person on Earth performed a calculation per second, it would take a year to do what Summit can do in a second.

The United States will soon claim ownership of the fastest supercomputer in the world, a title that China stripped of in 2013.

On Friday, the fastest supercomputer in the world - Summit - made its debut at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The monster machine packs an impressive 27,648 Volta Tensor Core GPUs and 9,216 processors in 5,600 square feet of cabinet space that is similar in size to two tennis courts. It weighs almost as much as a commercial airliner and is connected by 185 miles of fiber optic cables.

Oh, and it's fast. Very fast.

According to Nvidia, the machine can perform 200 quadrillions of floating point operations per second (FLOPS). In comparison, the Sunway TaihuLight of China - officially the fastest supercomputer in the world - has a rating of 93 petaflops.

The machine, built for the US Department of Energy, will help scientists research materials discovery, high-energy physics, health, and more. .

Nvidia CEO, Jensen Huang, describes Summit as the world's largest AI supercomputer, a machine that learns. "His software will write software, amazing software that no human can write."

Top500, the organization that ranks the 400 most powerful supercomputers in the world, is expected to update its rankings later in the month.
