Anthony Hitchens wants to be the best version of. . . Sean Lee it can be.
The Cowboys play three games in an 11-day period, starting with the Sunday night clash with the Eagles, and Lee could miss all three with a thigh injury. This will force Hitchens to slip from the linebacker to the linebacker. Jaylon Smith and Justin Durant will share the middle linebacker functions.
"The difference is where your eyes are," said Hitchens, via Kate Hairopoulos of the Dallas Morning News . "Every time you play, you play a guy, you touch a tight end, tapping a backslide, these are just different games and different positions where your eyes are.Throughout the week, I just have to work with Sean, if he does not play, and ask him what he sees on this piece or this formation. "
Hitchens made 36 tackles, including five in loss, in five games this season. He missed the start of the season after fracturing the tibial plateau of his right leg.
He returned to replace Smith as the starter at the interior linebacker. Now, the most versatile linebacker of the Cowboys will attempt to replace Lee, the only All-Pro defense, captain and flagman.
"The communication is huge, the guys lined up, and I'm going to be the guy who makes the calls if [Lee’s] not," said Hitchens. "I'm doing my best to imitate him and make sure that everyone is aligned. He will help me throughout the week. At the end of the day, though he is outside, I have to play the role of Sean Lee. "
