Calling directly into the HandBrake library gives it a richer user interface than the official Windows HandBrake GUI.

Features:

  • Multi-threaded

  • MP4, MKV containers

  • H.264 encoding with x264, the world's best video encoder

  • Fully Integrated Encoding Pipeline: Everything is in a process and no large Intermediate Intermediate Files

  • MPEG-4, MPEG-2, video of Theora

  • AAC, MP3, Vorbis, AC3, FLAC and AAC / AC3 / MP3 / DTS / HD audio coding

  • Target bit rate, size or quality for video

  • Encoding 2 passes

  • Decombination, detelecine, deinterlacing of filters

  • Batch coding

  • Preview of instantaneous sources

  • Creates small coded preview clips

  • Break, resume encoding

Prerequisite

You will need .NET 4 (only the client profile is required). If you do not have it, VidCoder will ask you to download it and install it. If you are using Windows 8, you do not need to install anything; it has .NET 4 pre-installed.

You do not need to install HandBrake for VidCoder to work.

What's new ?:

  • Fixed a crash after canceling the application when encoding.

  • Updated video rate calculation to take into account the audio fallback.

  • Video bit rate previews are now updated when audio settings are changed.

  • SQLite backend updated to detect patches that caused VidCoder to crash when using a non-standard negative value specifier in Windows.

  • Up-to-date translations.

  • Update of the HandBrake kernel to version 1.0.3, which fixes a handful of bugs for analysis / encoding

  • Added Bosnian translation, thanks to sunshineon.

  • Fixed a drag and drop scan to not lock the source window while scanning.

  • Solving the problem of unnecessarily registering window states at each startup.

  • Added selectors! Selectors allow you to automatically choose titles, audio, subtitles and destination, as well as automatically queuing or start coding when a source is loaded. While encoding presets personalize the way a file is encoded, selectors control what is included in the file and where it goes. This also includes a review of the existing audio and subtitle selection function; it allows you to specify multiple languages and has more flexibility in setting default subtitles.

  • Revised sizing interface.
    • Addition of filling support

    • Simplified user interface: can no longer specify both width and maximum width, just a check box to allow custom anamorphic, anamorphic support passed in favor of manual sizing

    • Move moved to Dimensioning tab

    • Renamed tabs Image -> Sizing, video -> Video Encoding

    • Information on aspect ratio of removed pixels in input / output preview areas if PAR is 1: 1.

    • The sections of the Dimensioning tab now roll up dynamically, supporting more window sizes.

  • Addition of a reducible left panel in the predefined coding window, to quickly change presets.

  • Added a built-in video player to the preview window. This can be disabled in Options -> General.

  • Added processor limitation option. This can limit the number of processor cores available for VidCoder for encoding.

  • Added ability to choose which codecs are included with auto-passthrough and which ones are recoded.

  • Moving the audio fallback encoder to the outside of the audio coding, since it affects all codings.

  • All internal storage of presets, selectors, queues, and window locations has changed from XML to JSON. Presets and saved queues are now stored as JSON .vjpreset and .vjqueue files associated with VidCoder.

  • Updated the .NET Framework to version 4.6 and added the ability to download and install the framework as part of the VidCoder installation. Hopefully that means faster boot times on x64 due to the new RyuJit engine.

  • Scanning progress now appears on the taskbar icon.

  • The import / export queue is now exposed on the CLI.

  • Added the ability to hibernate when encoding.

  • Added an option to close VidCoder after the end of the error-free encoding queue.

  • Added the ability to send the completed file to another program.

  • Switched to a simpler version scheme with two numbers.

  • Obsolete x86 version removed. If you use it on an x64 operating system, it will automatically be upgraded to the supported x64 version.

  • DXVA hardware decoding removed; it was mostly slower and caused problems.

  • Added warning when there are many titles with a similar duration. This helps to identify disks written with a bunch of fake titles and mixed chapters.

  • Changed the way the portable version locates the database file. It will now favor the use of the database file next to the portable executable rather than that of% appdata%.

  • The preview encoding progress bar now correctly reflects total progress and does not reset during a subtitle scan or 2-pass encoding.

  • The output of the log rendered to the window appears much faster.

  • Journal window changed to only scroll down on new logs if we were already down, so it will not come out if you scrolled to look at something earlier in the log.

  • The drag and drop file now works on any window.

  • We are now backing up the database files when they are upgraded and propose to restore them if the current database is too high. This allows you to go back to an earlier version and keep your old presets.

  • Added the management of a simple path argument directly to VidCoder.exe. This means that you can drag a video on its shortcut to launch VidCoder and open that file.

  • Added automatic detection of character set when adding SRT files. Gives a warning when the detection fails or does not match an available encoding.

  • Added automatic cleaning of temporary handbrake files for times when the encoder or application was crashing without cleaning.

  • The "Custom Folder for Previews" setting now replaces the directory used for static HandBrake previews.

  • Updated to handle the new HandBrake filter format, with named parameters. Added tooltips to boxes to list possible parameter names and to list default values when first opened.

  • Updated to keep the names of the chapters of the source video if they are present.

  • Moving batch scans to the worker process for better protection against scan crashes when loading a large number of files.

  • New translations
    • Georgian, thanks to Gela Mekoshkishvili.

    • Dutch, thanks to CSalat and Arco Keijzer.

    • Korean, thanks to Sheppaul.

  • Translations updated for other languages thanks to the 90+ translators of our site Crowdin

  • ... and a bunch of bug fixes.

  • In addition, the new HandBrake core has brought a lot of goodies:

  • VP9 video coding via libvpx

  • Intel QuickSync H.265 / HEVC Video Encoder (requires Skylake or newer processor)

  • Ultra HD / 4K color transition (support for BT.2020)

  • Supports high-resolution bit coding via external shared libraries (the video pipeline is always in 4-bit mode at 2: 0: 8)
    • x264 10-bit

    • x265 10-bit and 12-bit

  • Opus audio encoding / decoding via libopu

  • Passthrough now supports E-AC-3, FLAC and TrueHD audio formats
