Last March, we learned that Hello Games would release a major update for No Man's Sky this summer called "NEXT". Sean Murray was vague with the release date and the details. However, it has been speculated that the devs would eventually give the spatial sandbox a full-blown multiplayer mode.

Today Murray has confirmed that the update would indeed bring a real multiplayer to the game. The previous iteration of the multiplayer left little to be desired.

"We let people know that you will be able to play No Man's Sky as a complete multiplayer experience with your friends in NEXT," said the studio chief. "We also wanted to share our new cover."

Murray had already explained that they had decided to call the NEXT update because it was the "next step of a longer trip" for the studio and the players . The addition of multiplayer support is definitely a big step in the right direction when you consider that Murray had said that the game would be multiplayer at launch.

Although he noted that the universe is so massive that the chances of two players finding themselves in the same place would be far apart, this turned out to be a lie. There was no multiplayer support when the title was released, and the company endured a massive amount of criticism of the problem.

It later appeared that Sony had pushed Hello Games to release the game even though it knew it was not ready. Murray and his team withstood the pressure and launched a product that had no chance of being at the height of the hype.

To the credit of the studio, he has worked very hard over the past two years to improve the title, and there is no argument that the game has changed for good. All added content from the three major updates - Foundation, Pathfinder, Atlas Rises - has been free, and the fourth installment will not be different. Multiplayer support is the next step to bring No Man's Sky to the level of quality promised by Hello Games.

The next update will be on PlayStation 4 and PC on July 24th. This date coincides with the launch of the much-anticipated Xbox One version of the game.
