Ryzen 5,200 vs Core i5-8400: 36 Benchmark of the game

In recent weeks, we have analyzed two processors in more than 30 games: the AMD Ryzen 5 2600 and the Intel Core i5-8400. Before entering the results of benchmarking - and I promise you that there are many - here are some quick notes on the configuration of the test.



The Core i5-8400 platform features the MSI B360 Gaming Plus, a high-quality B360 card that has no trouble getting the most out of the hexa-core processor. Of course, we are limited to DDR4-2666 on this card, but we opted for G.Skill's high-quality, low-latency FlareX CL14 memory. The cooling of the i5-8400 is the Intel storage unit.






Then for the Ryzen 5 2600 we used the Asus ROG Crosshair VII Hero and we have two configurations: a stock configuration out of the box using the Wraith Stealth box cooler and G.Skill FlareX CL14 memory clocked at 2933 MHz. And a second test setup, running with an all-core 4.2GHz overclock using G.Skill Sniper X DDR4-3400 aggressively-tuned with tight sub-synchronizations. Here, the cooler has been improved for the Corsair H115i Pro.





For tests, we have 36 games on the menu. Each game has been tested at resolutions of 720p, 1080p and 1440p using the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti. I would have liked to include the Vega 64 Liquid, but considering that we had already performed 324 individual tests, three times each ... about 1000 performance tests later, we were not very enthusiastic about it. 39, idea to make 2,000. For the moment, let's focus on the CPU comparison and let the 1080 Ti run as a backdrop, so grab a drink, snacks and be at it. ;easy. Let us enter.








Game references



ARK: Survival Evolved, ARMA 3, Ashes of Uniqueness, Assassin's Creed, Battlefield 1



First, we have ARK: Survival Evolved and this is not a title I often test, but because of popular demand, it has been included in the list of tested games. He is often listed in the top 10 most played games on Steam so I imagine that some of you are eager to see the results.



I expected it to go wrong for Ryzen but the results are very surprising. We are mostly GPU related but at 720p we see Ryzen moving forward. Still due to the limitations of the GPU, the overclocked Ryzen 5 2600 was not faster than the original setup.



Another very popular game on Steam and still in high demand is ARMA 3. In the past, this game worked horribly on AMD processors, including Ryzen, but it was said that the games had been recently put to better use Ryzen processors, or at least processors with more than one kernel and this certainly seems to be the case.





Out of the box, the Ryzen 5 2600 had no problem with the Core i5-8400 and the games were clearly limited by the processor, as the overclocked 2600 offered impressive gains.








Even at 1440p, we witnessed a massive 20% increase in performance when overclocking Ryzen's hearts and memory. This meant that the 2600 was now 19% faster than the Core i5-8400 when comparing the average frame rate. I am quite shocked by these results since Ryzen played badly the last time I tested with ARMA 3.





Come on, you knew that Ashes of the Benchmark was going to be included and that's pretty much the only game that supports DX12, which I've tested with DX12, with a GeForce graphics card. Here we see that the Core i5-8400 and Ryzen 5 2600 are very evenly matched out of the box. The tests in 1080p and 1440p do not see us with a primary GPU with the preset 'crazy'. activated so Ryzen overclocking is not extremely beneficial. At 1440p, an increase of only 5% is observed, then 7% at 1080p, then 11% at 720p.





Ok, so some interesting results in Assassin's Creed Origins, let's talk about what's going on here. You will notice that the stock Ryzen 5 2600 allows exactly the same performance in 1080p as in 720p and that's because we are limited by the processor. Overclocking solves that and in 1080p we see 2600 able to match the 8400, but both CPUs are now GPU limited. We know it because in 720p the overclocked 2600 is able to shoot ahead of the 8400 by a remarkable margin for average frame rate.








Then finally at 1440p, we are almost entirely related to the GPU although the current configuration of Ryzen 5 2600 is still struggling to reach the maximum of the GTX 1080 Ti.





Test with Battlefield 1 shows how good the Core i5-8400 is, ready for use and without any problems, it offers very good performance in this demanding title. The Ryzen 5 2600 is also very respectable and while it was only 6% slower for the frame time result at 1080p, the average frame rate was 12% lower. This margin is somewhat undone at 1440p as we become strongly related to the GPU, although it's worth noting that clock overclocked even at this resolution the 2600 provides a much better 1% result.



Then, at lower resolutions, we see that the overclocking of the 2600 improves the average refresh rate by almost 20% and that this impressive gain only makes the Ryzen processor tuned a little faster than the Core i5-8400. But again it is the 1440p results that are the most impressive, here the 2600 was 18% faster than the 8400 for the frame time result.
