Tesla agreed to settle a class action brought by six owners of Model S and Model X who alleged that the automaker's semi-autonomous autopilot system was "essentially unusable and obviously unsafe."
Settlement still to be approved by US District Judge Beth Labson Freeman, reports Reuters.
Class members who paid an additional $ 5,000 for the Tesla Enhanced Autopilot feature between October 2016 and September 2017 will receive between $ 20 and $ 280 in compensation from the automaker.
In a statement to The Verge, a spokesman for Tesla said the amount that customers will receive will differ depending on when they bought and took delivery of their cars. The spokesman added that although the settlement is specific to customers in the United States, Tesla has decided to compensate all customers around the world in the same way (again, if approved by the court ).
There is no legal obligation to do this, said the representative, but they think it is "the right thing to do".
The spokesman said that it became clear [to Tesla] that it was taking longer than planned or initially planned to deploy new autopilot updates for customers. As such, as part of the proposed settlement agreement, they compensate customers who have had to wait longer than expected for the features.
Tesla would have agreed to add more than $ 5 million to the settlement fund, an amount that will also be used to pay legal fees and other related costs.
