Global smartphone shipments reached 345 million units in the first quarter of 2018, down 2.4% from one year to the next. The numbers prove once again that the demand for smartphones is cooling in a context of slower cycles of upgrading and slowing down of innovation.

Strategy Analytics claims that Apple's iPhone X was the world's best-selling smartphone with about 16 million units shipped during the first quarter. In fact, Apple dominated shipments across the board as four of the six most popular smartphone models came from the Cupertino-based company.

The other two top-six devices, the Android-based Xiaomi Redmi 5A and the Samsung Galaxy S9 +, had shipments estimated at 5.4 million and 5.3 million units, respectively. It should be noted that Samsung's new flagship products, the S9 and S9 +, began shipping around the end of the quarter, but that they are off to a good start. According to Strategy Analytics, the S9 + is expected to become the world's best-selling Android smartphone in the second quarter.

Apple shipped 12.5 million iPhone 8 models, 8.3 million iPhone 8 Plus units and 5.6 million iPhone 7 models in the first three months of 2018.

The six most popular phones collectively accounted for one in seven smartphones shipped during the quarter.
