Something to Hope: Intel excited the crowds at Computex yesterday with the announcement of a 28-core single-core processor, but AMD just finished by revealing a chip with 32 hearts and 64 threads: Threadripper 2.

Not only does AMD crush Intel regarding the number of threads and threads with Threadripper 2, but it also beats the company in the market. While the 28-core chip of its rival is expected to arrive in late 2018, the second-generation Threadripper will be there in the third quarter of this year.

Threadripper 2 doubles the 16 cores and 32 threads of the original chip and relies on the same ZEN + 12nm architecture as AMD's Ryzen desktop processors. It operates in the same TR4 socket as its predecessor, will be air cooled and will have a TDP rating of 250W. There will also be other versions of Threadripper 2, including one with 24 cores.

"The flagship processor - the 32 core - will have Ryzen 4 dead inside the package, these being linked to AMD's Infinity fabric that allows these four matrices to function as a single monster processor" said vice president AMD. General Manager of Computer and Graphics, Jim Anderson.

Some current X399 motherboards may be struggling with Threadripper 2 in terms of power supply, but that could mean only more restrictive overclocking. However, we have seen refreshed X399 cards at Computex with enhanced power delivery capabilities (19-phase VRM) designed with Threadripper 2 and its many hearts in mind.

In addition to Threadripper 2, AMD stated that a Radeon RX Vega 56 "nano" graphics card designed for Mini-ITX systems is now available. He also announced a new generation of Vega GPUs for workstations and data centers based on the 7nm process, adding that people should "stay tuned" to 7nm GPUs.

Lisa Su, CEO of AMD, said that more than 400 million PCs and consoles used machines running with Radeon graphics. It also announced 7-nanometer Epyc processors for businesses and data centers, scheduled for launch in 2019.
