Bottom line: While most people simply celebrate the end of a game, speedrunners aim for perfection through dedication, discipline, and repetition. Witnessing the best of the best hone their skills is a real treat.
The elite players were Super Mario Bros. speedrunning and other classics for decades. While times have fallen over the years as new techniques and tricks are discovered, some players inevitably find that they need more of a challenge than a simple race.
It's here that category extensions come into play.
The star speed skier Kosmic recently completed a race of Super Mario Bros. less than five minutes in one of the most difficult extensions of Speedrun.com: OneHand. That's right, Kosmic beat the game in less than five minutes by handling the joystick with one hand.
The feat seems incredibly impressive (and it is) although Kosmic makes it easy. The strategy seems pretty simple - turn the controller to the side, use your thumb to manipulate the directional pad, your finger to hold the run button and your finger to press the jump button.
Kosmic said during the record run that one of the most difficult aspects of the challenge is to make sure that your fingers slide buttons. Better yet - in the end, he says he made some mistakes and said it could have been a 4:58 race without any room for improvement.
Kosmic will direct this same speedrun to a hand as a bonus event at the upcoming Summer Games. The "speedrunning-for-charity" event will take place from June 24 to July 1 and will raise funds for Doctors Without Borders.
